General Information for St. John Hospital Residents Program
Listed below is some general information you may be interested in before you begin your program. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Medical Education Department.
A beeper will be issued to you when you begin in the training program. Should the beeper malfunction or break, it should be returned to Operator Services (located in the West Addition) for proper servicing. Batteries for your beepers are available at all information desks as well as Operator Services. Should your beeper be lost or stolen, please report it to the Medical Education Department. Operator Services will be notified and a replacement beeper issued.
Payroll Procedures
Paychecks will be distributed every two weeks. You have the option of having it mailed to your home or having it directly deposited into your bank account. If you choose to direct deposit, please allow two pay cycles before direct deposit goes into effect and plan on picking up your first two checks in Medical Education.
Vacation
Residents are eligible for three weeks of vacation per contract year. All vacation time must be approved in advance by your Program Director. Vacation time does not accumulate.
Meals
A lunch buffet is provided for residents and medical students in the Lower Level Conference Room between 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Monday-Friday. Please be sure to swipe your ID badge in the card reader next to the lunch buffet. A separate meeting room will be available for those physicians that eat their lunch but are unable to stay for the conference.
If patient care duties necessitates that you eat after 12:45 p.m., you will be able to obtain your lunch in the cafeteria. When you obtain your ID badge, you will also be issued a meal card. Be sure to swipe the meal card at the cashier in the Cafeteria. There is a $10.00 cost to the resident to replace the meal card or the ID badge if it is lost or destroyed. Meals for resident physicians who are on-call will be provided in the cafeteria.
Change in name or address
Any change in your name or address must be immediately reported to the Medical Education Department, the Human Resources Department, as well as your program office, in order to ensure no delay in receipt of important payroll information or other paperwork.
If you hold a permanent Michigan license, you must also notify the State Licensing Board of the change, in writing:

Conduct and general work rules
Residents represent St. John Hospital and Medical Center to patients and visitors. Prompt and courteous attention to these needs must be the primary concern of each resident. Each resident is expected to conform to reasonable rules of good conduct, as dictated by common sense, and to comply with St. John Hospital and Medical Center policies.
Confidentiality
Information residents see or hear concerning a patient’s illness, injury or personal affairs is strictly confidential. Case discussion, consultation, examination and treatment are confidential and should be conducted discreetly.
Dress code / personal appearance
All residents are expected to use good judgment in the selection of clothing and maintenance of personal cleanliness.
Identification badge and meal card
Identification badge and meal card are issued when you begin in the training program. Your ID badge will be used for parking and access throughout the hospital. Your meal card will be used in the cafeteria only. If your ID badge or meal card are lost or destroyed, you will be charged a replacement fee of $10.00 to receive another one.
Licensure
Residents must possess a valid Michigan medical license. Please visit the www.mich.gov website. You will be able to print your license applications. Please follow the instruction sheet. The Medical Education Department will pay for your educational limited licenses. The Medical Education Department will renew all limited medical licenses each year, however, it is the resident’s responsibility to ensure that his/her medical license is valid at all times. When you apply for a permanent license, you will be responsible for the application fees.
You are allowed to have a Michigan Limited Educational License for a period of six (6) years. After that time, you must apply for a permanent medical license.
Parking: All Residents are required to park in the East Parking Structure on the roof. .

In May, 2007, Mauer Manor rented to a St. John Hospital resident sight unseen. This apartment was re-carpeted, re-padded, repainted. Window treatments were provided and a new A/C, new refrigerator, new stove, and a new vent hood were furnished for her. We understand that most Residents will stay at Mauer Manor for atleast 3-4 years and we want your stay to be as enjoyable as possible. We are prepared to do the same for you. In April, 2008, Mauer Manor rented to a St. John Hospital resident sight unseen from Toronto, Canada. This apartment was equipped with new Granite counter tops, new carpet, new appliances, new fixtures, new bathroom and kitchen floor tiles, new electrical, and new closet doors. The completed unit was 100% remodeled!
